Credit Score and CIBIL

What Is a CIBIL Score and How Is It Calculated?

✍️ Ramesh Kartik RM • 📅 October 24, 2026 • ⏱️ 2 min read
Key takeaways

  • The score runs from 300 to 900. Higher means lower risk to lenders.
  • Payment history and credit utilization influence it the most.
  • Lenders set their own cut-offs, so a score is a guide, not a guarantee.

Score vs report

A credit report lists your loans, cards, repayment history and enquiries. The credit score is a three-digit number built from that report. TransUnion CIBIL is one of four credit bureaus in India, and its score is the one many lenders mention first.

What goes into the score

The bureaus do not publish exact weights, and scoring models change, so treat any percentages you read elsewhere as rough guides.

What counts as a good score

How often does it update?

Lenders send data to the bureaus regularly, and RBI rules now require more frequent updates than before, so your recent payments show up sooner. You are also entitled to one free full credit report each year from each bureau.
